The Equality Project says “Yes”

The Equality Project’s statement on The Voice.

The Equality Project® wholeheartedly supports the Uluru Statement from the Heart and proudly stands in full support of a “Yes” vote in the upcoming referendum.

Our commitment to fairness, equality and social justice drives us to advocate for constitutional change to introduce an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. We understand that this is just one crucial step in an ongoing journey towards progress.

This referendum presents an extraordinary, once-in-a-generation opportunity to strengthen and unite Australia and improve the outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and close the gap.

This is about recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution and guaranteeing them a Voice in their own affairs. This is about ensuring Indigenous communities have a say in the laws and policies that directly impact them. Above all, this is about self-determination and respect – acknowledging and valuing the unique perspectives and rights of our First Nations peoples.

We believe that LGBTIQA+ communities have an important role to play in raising awareness and rallying support in solidarity with Indigenous people. As communities that experience stigma and marginalisation, we understand the significance of recognition and belonging.

We know what it feels like to be excluded, and we understand the importance of having a voice in shaping the issues that affect our communities. This cause resonates deeply with many of us, igniting a profound sense of empathy and a determination to ensure that Indigenous communities are treated with the fairness and respect they rightfully deserve.

Our support for a "Yes" vote aligns with our broader mission of promoting fairness, equality, and social justice for all LGBTIQA+ Australians. By recognising and supporting the rights of our First Nations peoples, we contribute to building a more inclusive and equitable society. We understand that true progress extends beyond the scope of this referendum, and we are dedicated to working alongside the First Nations community for meaningful change.

In the lead-up to the referendum, we will actively work to raise awareness, share information, and foster solidarity among our LGBTIQA+ communities. We encourage open and respectful dialogue that amplifies the voices and experiences of Indigenous peoples.

We will work alongside The Long Walk, offering our full support to their initiatives leading up to the referendum. The Long Walk is a charity inspired by Michael Long's journey (to Canberra) to prioritise the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on the national agenda. By supporting The Long Walk, we unite in their mission to promote reconciliation and social justice for Indigenous communities.

We call on LGBTIQA+ communities to unite in solidarity with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, friends, siblings, neighbours, colleagues, and leaders. Together, let’s support a 'Yes' vote in the referendum.

Let's come together as a collective force, creating a brighter future where the voices of our Indigenous communities are heard, valued, and respected. Together, we can make history and shape a better and fairer Australia for generations to come.
